Pet Emergency Care

When it comes to pet emergency care, you will want to consider how you will handle your pet in case of an emergency or disaster situation.

Black Lab

As you know, pets are a very important part of your family.

We have a black lab named Bo. He is such a wonderful dog! His unconditional love absolutely brightens our day. So when you are putting together your family emergency plan, make sure that you haven't forgotten about your pet emergency care plan.

It's a good idea to have a plan in place ahead of time in case of an emergency. In different situations you may need to leave your home, in some cases you might have to leave your pet at home. There are other times when authorities won't let you return to your home. So you need to think ahead of time how you will handle your pet's safety in these different circumstances.

How do you evacuate with your pet?

If it happens that you need to leave your home with your pet during an emergency, think about where you will go. What are your options in an emergency evacuation?
  • Make plans with friends or family who live outside your area to care for your pets.

  • Check with kennels, grooming facilities or your veterinarian to see if they can offer a safe haven during an emergency.

  • Familarize your pet with your evacuation plan so that your pet becomes comfortable and is at ease with the evacuation process.

  • Make a list of the pet-friendly hotels or motels outside of your area.

  • Your pet might have a special hiding place when he or she is scared. So find out ahead of time where he or she might likely hide if there is an emergency.

  • A stressed pet might behave differently and may be more agressive than normal. To prevent the possibility of bites, it's a good idea to use a muzzle. Also be aware that a frightened pet may try to run away.

  • It's a good idea to have a travel bag ready to go for your pet in case of an emergency. Check with your veterinarian to see if there are any items that he or she might suggest you include in your travel bag.
