CPR Information

Facts about the respiratory system and CPR Information

  • The size of a normal heart is equal to the size of your fist and it is divided into two chambers (the left side and the right side). The right side of the heart gets blood from the body and pumps it into and through the lungs. The left side of the heart pumps blood that has been freshly oxygenated to the rest of the body.

    causes of heart attack

  • In one minute the heart beats 60-100 times, in a day it beats 100,000 times. In one minute it will pump five quarts of blood and in one day 1,800 gallons.

  • The amount of oxygen in room air is approximately 21 percent. The amount of oxygen in exhaled air is approximately 16 percent. In order for all the body organs and cells to live they must have oxygen.

  • The function of the lungs is to exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen.

  • Exhalation happens during CPR as a normal relaxation of the chest.

  • CPR will be given to a close friend or a member of the family in 90 percent of the cases.

  • Call 9-1-1 first then begin CPR.

  • Make sure the victim is lying on a flat, hard surface when doing CPR.

  • During CPR people can suffer from cracked ribs and may vomit.

  • It's not recommended to do blind finger sweeps in the mouth.
