Allergic Reaction

An allergic reaction is usually a mild over-reaction of the immune system from a substance called an allergen.

Allergens Can Include Substances Such As:
  • Foods - especially peanuts, eggs, seafood, nuts, grains and milk

  • Plants

  • Pollen

  • Medication

  • Insect Stings - such as bees, wasps and ants

  • Latex and Rubber Products

  • Chemicals

  • Mold
Mild Symptoms of Allergies
  • Hives - raised red welts on the skin, that can be itchy

  • Swelling

  • Feeling itchy

  • Runny nose
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergy and is a major over-reaction of the immune system and can be life threatening. Early symptoms may be mild, such as skin rash, runny nose or feeling strange. However, in some cases these symptoms can become severe rather quickly.

Severe Symptoms of Allergies
Allergy
  • Hives or swelling

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Abdominal pain

  • Tightness of the throat

  • Hoarse throat

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Dizziness

  • Rapid heart beat

  • Low blood pressure

  • Cardiac arrest


How to Prevent Allergies and Reactions:
EpiPen
  • Avoiding known allergens that you are allergic to.

  • Allergy shots which gradually build up an immunity to the reaction, such as bee stings.

  • Carrying a pre-loaded Epinephrine shot to treat a reaction before medical help arrives.

  • Get allergy testing if you suspect you might be allergic.

  • Wearing a medical identification bracelet to alert others of your allergy.
Treatment
  • Early cases can be treated with corticosteroids and antihistamines.

  • More severe cases can use a Epinephrine shot.

  • For medical emergencies doctors can treat with Epinephrine and with intravenous fluids.

  • If necessary, the doctor can treat the patient with oxygen and mechanical ventilation.
Call for emergency assistance immediately when someone is experiencing anaphylaxis! This can save someone's life!
